Associate Director, Real World Data Engineer

The BPM Evidence organization is accountable for the delivery of global strategic studies required to generate the evidence to build the confidence on AZ therapies and additional observational, interventional and externally sponsored research required by Global Product Teams and Global Medical Teams.

The RWD Engineer will report directly to the Senior Director, RWD Office and will play a key role in validation of RWD assets and preparation of analytical datasets to inform on Therapeutic Area (TA) strategies. RWD Engineer will be hands on with patient level real world data with a keen interest in learning and evaluating different modalities of real-world data. As a founding member of the team, the RWD Engineer can set a strong foundation and influence the strategic direction for RWD Engineers.

This role requires a hybrid skill set of technical ability and knowledge of RWD and use of RWD for generating insights and evidence. 

In order to accomplish our goals and enable the best patient outcomes, we look for future AZ leaders to have core capabilities:

  • Collaborative/matrix management skills with a focus on leading diverse groups (e.g., cultural, geographical, functional) to achieve excellent results in shared goals

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to distil complexity down to what matters to our stakeholders

  • Prepare cohorts, virtual registries and/or analytical datasets for secondary analyses of data from EMR, claims, registries to inform Therapeutic Area (TA) RWE strategies

  • Support sourcing of patient level real world data access & evaluation of secondary datasets for ‘fit for purpose’ for Medical and cross-functional use cases

  • Build re-usable and widely usable real world data assets that provide dataset, cohort or definitions overviews

  • Maintain awareness of new developments in RWE trends, analytics, data access, and technology which may be applied to the design and execution of research and/or the management and reporting of data used in research

  • Act as a point of contact between BPM Evidence and other teams utilizing RWD datasets

Essential Requirements for the Role:

  • Minimum of a Bachelors Or MSc + relevant industry experience

  • Hands-on experience with EMR/Health IT, disease registries, and/or insurance claims databases – familiarity with ADAMs/STDMs a plus

  • Skilled in SQL and R and/or Python - comfortable building data pipelines from databases with transformations across these languages

  • Skilled in building data summaries, exploring datasets in R or Python

  • Knowledge/curiosity in exploring technology platforms and solutions – enthusiastic to partner with Technology Lead and build POCs

  • Strategic thinking & IT minded

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written

Desirable Requirements for the Role:

  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks

  • Experienced with building visualizations in R or Python preferred

  • Demonstrated capability in working collaboratively, strategic thinking and problem-solving using communication styles that are appropriate for the situation and stakeholders
