The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented, pragmatic and intellectually curious lawyer to support our US and global Market Access and Pricing teams. The role will report to the Deputy General Counsel for the BioPharmaceuticals Business and be responsible for advising on market access and pricing-related issues across all of the key therapeutic areas.  The role is based in our US Sales & Marketing headquarters in Wilmington, DE.

The Legal Director, Market Access will be part of the Legal team at AstraZeneca that advises the business on key legal risks and opportunities across the discovery, development and commercialization of our life-changing medicines. We also handle commercial and governmental litigation and investigations. This broad remit allows us to work in new and developing areas of law and business and constantly expand our knowledge and capabilities.

The Legal Director, Market Access, will operate as an integral member of the Global and US Market Access and Pricing teams, contributing fully to business decisions with high quality legal advice and analysis. Strategic thinking and influencing skills are key as the position has a direct impact on business activities with significant reputational or financial value and risk. The Legal Director, Market Access will be a proactive business partner with an understanding of internal and external trends, and must be able to articulate legal considerations to senior stakeholders on market access risks and opportunities clearly and concisely.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Coordinate timely and practical advice across all aspects of the market access legal landscape
  • Monitor and advise on current market access trends and enforcement priorities and potential impact on global product strategies
  • Advise on legal aspects of contractual arrangements and strategic opportunities with customers across the US managed market system, including specialty pharmacies, PBMs, GPOs, wholesalers and distributors
  • Advise on mitigation strategies for fraud and abuse and other legal risks related to patient access and reimbursement programs, patient savings programs and value-based contracts  
  • Work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization and coordinate legal advice on significant market access issues with the broader legal team
  • Proactively seek to improve ways of working and to mentor, motivate and contribute to the professional development of colleagues

Essential requirements

  • JD and admission to the bar of at least one state
  • 7+ years of experience working in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Substantial experience managing complex legal arrangements and risks subject to multi-jurisdictional legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Strong working knowledge of the pharmaceutical/life sciences industry, including an in-depth understanding of the US drug pricing and reimbursement process and of the laws governing commercial arrangements
  • Ability to take accountability, appropriately calibrate risk and enable clear decision-making with confidence and professional maturity
  • Intellectually curious, appetite for learning and a proven ability to master new subjects quickly and effectively
  • Strong leadership capabilities, solution-oriented and pragmatic mindset
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, often with limited information.
  • Resilient and able to operate effectively and independently under pressure
  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively and manage and prioritize a diverse workload
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience managing accountabilities and stakeholders. High level of integrity and strong work ethic

Highly Desirable Requirements

  • Experience working with European medicinal legal and regulatory regimes and European drug regulatory agencies
  • In-house or law firm experience with litigation, preferably government litigation and investigations
  • Previous in-house experience operating in a global legal department strongly preferred
