Data Governance Lead

Location - Cambridge / Macclesfield / Wilmington


Responsible for

In this role you will be responsible for the establishment and monitoring of data governance for the core data assets across AstraZeneca and the design and development of standard methodology across the company.

Purpose of the role

As the Data Governance Lead you will work within the Data and Information Governance (DIG) team that forms part of Enabling Data function with IT. The team works closely with Science, Operations Commercial and Enabling Functions, to bring Data and Information Governance together under a single management framework.

In this role you will develop and establish consistent processes and reportable metrics across AstraZeneca from project to business as usual. This will include directing a team of two Data Governance and Data Quality SME’s, working with business partners including data architecture, data owners, data stewards, business sponsors and subject matter authorities to establish a data governance and quality programme to improve data within our and core systems and business processes.

Key accountabilities

Responsibilities will evolve over time and will include but will not be restricted to:

  • Maintain a detailed audit of AstraZeneca’s information assets, Meta-Data, as well as the teams and processes that use them.
  • Craft and retain ownership accountability of corporate and business function data systems.
  • Develop standards, policies and procedures to support the creation and provide technical assurance for the ongoing implementation of the data governance policy within the business
  • Own the delivery of the data governance and data quality programme within the key business areas, acting as both SME, reviewer and guide to data owners and stewards.
  • Lead and develop projects across AstraZeneca to ensure data governance and data quality policies and practices are embedded throughout the company
  • Establish standard methodology and ownership of the corporate taxonomy and ontology, and develop rules for their use
  • Ensure the alignment the data governance and data quality programme to the enterprise information strategy
  • Embed and align AZ's information security and privacy strategies with any data governance and quality programs and initiatives
  • Use specialist knowledge and expertise to identify improvements through reducing data redundancy, duplication and appropriate data reuse
  • Continually assess and identify risks in line with the AstraZeneca risk management approach, ensuring they are mitigated and accounted for work within the data governance programme
  • Support and guide data and information stewardship activities and management of data quality, retention and uses
  • Lead the development and implement data quality metrics across the business functions

Skills Knowledge and Experience



Are you a post graduate or have the equivalent experience in data and information management or experienced working within an information or data governance setting.


  • Do you have a deep understanding of information management practices including information lifecycle management, data modelling, master data management and carrying out business audits and requirements gathering
  • Ability to work with business users to elicit and formally define their requirements
  • You will have experience of using cloud-based applications, for example Salesforce, Office 365 and SharePoint


  • Do you have experience of leading a data governance programme and team
  • Experience of working in the life sciences industry
  • Experience of system testing and crafting test scripts
  • Experience of working in an Agile environment
  • Experience of working in a technology focused company


  • Do you have the ability to extract information by questioning, active listening and interviewing
  • Understanding of the principles of IT security and data protection (e.g. Data Protection legislation in Europe and the USA)
  • Specialist knowledge of data governance principles and practices


  • Superb communication and interpersonal skills – able to liaise with colleagues at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to produce clear requirements, specifications and documentation
  • Cam you work on own initiative within agreed boundaries
  • Able to lead conflicting priorities
  • An ability to work with technical and non-technical staff
