Senior Scientist - Chemical Biology

Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Chemical Biology & Proteomics team at AZ.  In this role you will contribute to the protein degradation field.  You will be responsible for quantitative mass spectrometry studies to elucidate mechanisms of action and global degradation profiles of small molecule degraders for driving key project decisions. You will have knowledge of ubiquitin proteasome biology and its role in protein homeostasis.

Key Accountabilities:

The Senior Scientist – Chemical Biology will be accountable for specified aspects of the chemical biology strategies according to the project objectives that include:

  • Designing and delivering on projects with the highest scientific standards, utilizing quantitative proteomics-based methods such as global and targeted proteomics and chemoproteomics pull-downs to address specific biological ques tions.
  • Collaborating with the chemical biology platform and project teams for experimental design and with quantitative biology for downstream pathway analysis.
  • Embedded into drug discovery project teams, demonstrating effective engagement with other disciplines (e.g. chemistry, biosciences, safety).
  • Actively contribute to shape and advancement of the scientific direction of projects as a member of cross-functional teams through presentation of their data and contribution to the overall success of the project.
  • Contribute to publication strategy as needed, driving timely preparation and delivery of patents/research publications in collaboration with IP group.
  • To evaluate and manage relations with external collaborations when and as needed.
  • Leading local discovery working groups, participate actively in global groups or global activities.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies including GLS and SHE. 

Essential Requirements:

Minimum: Ph.D. in Chemical Biology, Proteomics or Biochemistry with Postdoctoral experience.

Functional Knowledge:

Must be able to operate effectively in multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in their discipline. This role requires significant interactions with other scientists across the global AZ organization and with external groups.

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be familiar with chemical biology principles and technologies, and their application to understanding small molecule affects in complex biological systems.
  • Expertise in use and maintenance of Orbitrap mass spectrometers (e.g. QE+, Lumos) 
  • Expertise in proteomic sample preparation and MS quantification methods such as SILAC, TMT, iTRAQ.
  • Proficiency in data processing (Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant) and data analysis with a fundamental knowledge of statistics.
  • The ideal candidate will have knowledge of ubiquitin proteasome biology and have previous experience with small molecule protein degraders.
  • Independently design and execute experiments for cellular signaling pathway interrogation, hypothesis testing and practical knowledge with suitable biological models and positive and negative small molecule controls.
  • Familiarity with bottom-up mass spectrometry-based applications for in cell and in vitro quantitative proteomics.
  • Preferably have an understanding of cell biology and biochemistry techniques, such as cell lysing, protein extraction and identification.
  • Be active in Chemical Biology forums and publication record in the field (communications to symposiums, peer reviewed journal articles and/or patent applications)

Areas of Expertise/Specialization

•      Awareness of recent development in literature in the field of chemical biology and/or proteomics as well as ubiquitin proteasome biology both inside and outside AstraZeneca.

•      Good communication and networking skills.
