Principal Scientist/Team Leader – Proteomics

Job Purpose:

The Chemical Biology and Proteomics department at AstraZeneca is accountable for developing methods to study drug/target engagement, the application of chemoproteomics methods to identify the molecular targets of AstraZeneca compounds, and the study of the effect of AstraZeneca compounds on the cellular proteome.  We are now seeking a talented and experienced scientist to lead our newly established Proteomics team to create and execute an effective strategy for the implementation of state-of-the-art mass spectrometry technologies with specific emphasis on drug induced proteome dynamics, investigation of post-translational modifications, characterization of clinical and preclinical samples towards effective target identification, biomarker discovery and patient stratification.

This role will be a key member of the Extended Discovery Biology and Chemical Biology & Proteomics Leadership teams, providing input into the overall strategy for personnel and scientific development of the Department, and ensuring alignment with business objectives.

As the Principal Scientist/Team Leader, you will manage high level risk by making complex judgments, will drive innovation and ensure scientific excellence through internal scientific development, external collaborations, and competitive awareness. You will be expected to establish and lead external collaborations.

You will be accountable for ensuring that objectives, calibrated performance evaluation, salary reviews and bonus setting are in place for all direct reports and that consistency exists across the department. Accountable for ensuring compliance with the AstraZeneca SHE standards and Code of Conduct within the sub-team.

Ensure flexible resourcing of the global therapeutic area projects according to agreed priorities using the full potential of the team to deliver the department objectives.

You must be proactive, able to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with international project teams and senior leaders, across scientific disciplines such as chemistry, molecular biology, and safety to contribute to mechanistic hypotheses generation through the interpretation of complex proteomics data.

Essential Requirements:

Ph.D. in biochemistry, proteomics, analytical chemistry and 6+ years pharmaceutical industry or academic experience in the proteomics field including a significant number of years leading a team of highly qualified personnel. This role demands in-depth people management experience and extensive experience in leading, motivating, developing personnel.

Must have ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in their discipline. Will be an outstanding scientist with a proven track record of innovation and delivery in drug discovery projects.  May also have experience as a project leader involving multi-disciplinary resource management.

The ideal candidate will have:

Excellent leadership skills in addition to a high level of interactive, effective communication to set clear direction for the proteomics team and directly advising others at a high level.

Ability to create an environment that promotes scientific excellence focused on efficient problem solving and delivery to meet project needs.

Have leading knowledge of proteomics and a proven ability to operate and maintain a mass spectrometry platform including data processing for large-scale protein characterization and quantification applications.  Experience with, liquid handling systems, and robotic automation is highly desired.

The candidate is expected to possess strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment, regularly presenting internal updates, strategies and contributing to publication in high level peer-reviewed journals and international conferences.
