Associate Principal Scientist, Medicinal Chemist, IMED Oncology

As an Experienced Medicinal chemist in the IMED Oncology group in Waltham, MA you’ll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives. IMED (Innovative Medicines and Early Development) focuses on scientific advances in small molecules, oligonucleotides and other emerging technologies and drug discovery platforms across our focus areas.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

We are seeking to recruit a highly qualified medicinal chemist who will be joining our fast-paced multidisciplinary oncology team.  In this role, you will provide scientific leadership within a medicinal chemistry department serving as a mentor and leader to less experienced scientific contributors. You will be accountable for: ensuring the timely delivery of high quality scientific milestones from department projects and therapeutic area objectives; driving the strategic direction of the department in alignment with department priorities and vision; and strategic planning and long-term talent development of the section including staff development in science and line roles within and across the functions by identifying training needs, rotation/secondment opportunities and gaining of cross-functional expertise.

You will function as a project chemistry leader and may also lead major collaborations with external partners.  You may also share in leadership responsibilities within the medicinal chemistry department.

Essential Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry with >5 years of combined postdoctoral and/or equivalent research experience within the pharmaceutical industry, including experience leading teams of highly qualified personnel.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment, providing leadership and insight in your discipline.
  • Broad understanding in all or most specialist areas within medicinal chemistry and an appreciation of how these areas contribute to achievement of the overall business objectives. The successful candidate will utilize knowledge and experience to influence strategic thinking and to develop the department to meet future business demands
  • Robust track record of portfolio delivery - proven examples of driving innovation within drug discovery projects to deliver clinical drug candidates
  • ‘Cutting edge’ knowledge of own area of specialization, and experience taking a leading role in establishing best practice in that area of specialization.
  • Strong track record at leading, motivating, developing and organizing personnel.
  • Thorough understanding how safety/health/environment personnel policies and procedures impact department work.
  • Strong record of recent peer-reviewed publications and/or external presentations and engagement in the external scientific community

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience as a project leader involving multi-disciplinary resource management.
  • Experience in working across multiple drug modalities including both small (MW < 600) and medium-sized (MW 600-1500) molecules.
