Role Summary

The Medical Director is responsible for leading the medical department to ensure high quality output and disseminate impactful medical evidence to healthcare professionals and decision makers in close collaboration with the commercial and market access teams. The Medical Director is a member of the Austrian Senior Management Team with shared responsibility for the leadership, business development and strategy of the whole organization.

Key Accountabilities

  • Set and implement the vision and direction for the development of the medical organization within the MC through strategic planning and in accordance with global/regional policies and strategies.
  • Sets Medical strategy in line with the AT Brand Strategies and Global/Regional Medical Strategies
  • Provide organisation with deep expertise in TA knowledge, including advancements in medical practices
  • Lead and bring critical medical insights to support the development of marketing strategies whilst building new medical capabilities where required to drive business value.
  • Develop a strong network of key external experts and represent AZ at external industry, government, medical symposia and advisory boards to enhance the leading role of medical affairs and the image and reputation of AZ.
  • Provide strong leadership to the Medical Team to ensure a highly efficient service, developing business objectives focused on and supported by metrics measuring key, value-adding outcomes
  • Lead, develop and coach the medical team through the effective implementation of the AZ people processes and practices and regularly assess potential capability gaps.
  • Active member of the Austria Senior Management Team (SMT) and strong business partner for the commercial and market access function.
  • Contribute to the EU Medical Directors Network

Qualifications

  • High Degree level qualification in science/medicine (M.D.)
  • English knowledge on a business level
  • Fluent German and English knowledge

Experience

  • Excellent knowledge of the Austrian environment and health market
  • Extensive experience in relationship and stakeholder management especially for KEEs
  • Several years’ experience in Medical Affairs roles
  • Strong business acumen
  • Deep knowledge of the GCP/GVP/GRP/GMP compliance framework
  • Project management experience
  • Extensive team management experience
  • Strong focus on science
  • Strong focus on effective decision making and results
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop capability across cross-functional teams
