Job Summary:

BD Director

The Alliances and Business Development Business Unit focus on establishing innovative external partnerships to

1) bring in exciting new innovations in medicine via licensing activities;

2) create new business models via strategic alliances to support legacy brands. 

The recruit will

(1) lead VC network establishment to support iDream Hub China, work closely with iDream Hub PMOs for strategy formation and help PMOs scout biotechs to the Hub in China;

(2) lead “In global for China” deal sourcing to support AstraZeneca China business growth and product portfolio optimization;

(3) liaise with R&D (Onco & BioPharma) BD for early stage innovation opportunities from Great China region to support enrichment of AstraZeneca innovative pipeline / technology;

(4) lead relevant deal transaction and execution.    


  • The core responsibility of this position is to design and execute external partnership to drive business growth (including iDream Hub WuXi growth).   
  • Build strong relationships with VC, biotechs and government funding agencies. Lead the establishment of a preeminent healthcare VC network to support iDREAM WuXi Hub (investing biotechs in the Hub and bringing VCs’ portfolio companies to the hub). Work closely with iDREAM Hub lead for the strategy development, liaise with PMOs network, AstraZeneca regional GA, Medical, BD teams and WuXi Government’s scout team to establish the process/mechanism that could continuously identify & introduce start-up incumbents to the Hub at WuXi.
  • Build a thorough understanding of the company’s portfolio and related disease areas and provide technical & operational leadership to ensure effective scouting and high quality assessment to new partnership opportunities from global to China (not limited to early stage assets). 
  • Develop solid business case (in-depth understanding of gaps, market space/needs, IP strength, etc.) to get internal approval and external alignment on the partnership.
  • Lead team to drive the execution of the deal by leading cross-functional collaboration in AZ with key stakeholder functions including Medical, Marketing, Finance, Legal, and market access to ensure clear objective alignment, transparent communication and close teamwork.
  • Liaise with R&D BD & Strategy teams (Biopharma and Oncology) to identify R&D stage innovation opportunities (in-licensing, out-licensing, collaborations) from the regional. 


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree (preferably in a scientific discipline) plus advanced degree (Master / MBA / Ph.D./ M.D./ J.D.).
  • >10 years’ experience in pharmaceutical or healthcare related industry, with in-depth knowledge of this industry (including drug R&D) and the role & dynamics of corporate and business development.
  • 5+ years experiences in designing and negotiating complex business development transactions in pharma/biotech industry, with outstanding and proven negotiation expertise. 
  • Innovative thinking, openness to new ideas, comfortability with uncertainties, and ability to think out of box are core competencies for the job.
  • Excellent project management and analytical skills, with experience in an environment requiring significant data analysis and cross-functional interaction.
  • Able to think analytically and strategically, synthesize information quickly and logically.
  • Commitment to teamwork and able to lead a cross functional team.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Fluent in English and Mandarin, both written and verbal.
