DMPK scientists occupy high profile, visible roles within R&D Oncology.  We are looking for an individual who has a passion for PKPD modelling and DMPK science, applied to cancer biology, with the experience of working in both discovery and development.

The Principal Scientist provides the projects with expert DMPK input as well modelling input into exploring PK/PD/Efficacy in pre-clinical models, in order to iteratively build an understanding of the effects on target and biological pathway to predict human dose and schedules. Having a broad DMPK knowledge and provide overall functional input into project teams.

You will be expected to:

  •  You will act as a DMPK functional leader for Oncology projects from discovery through development to life cycle management.
  • You’ll possess specialist knowledge in the DMPK area and is seen as a source of reference.  Recognised as an expert in own field providing solutions that are highly innovative to tasks on difficult drug projects and unusually scientific complex problem. You may lead projects, be responsible for training and developing others. Contributes to business development and will influence strategic direction.
  • You will play a leading role in the department ensuring that state of the art DMPK science is applied broadly and consistently across drug discovery and development to support compound design and project progression.
  • Act as a mentor to junior staff within DMPK as well as outside DMPK for scientific and career development aspects.

Major responsibilities:

  • Deliver the preclinical and translational PKPD work in targets/projects from Target Validation to LCM
  • Design preclinical and forward and backward translational PKPD studies and report results to project teams
  • Deliver Drug-drug interaction predictions, risk assessments to project teams and regulatory report
  • Calculate safety margins and make recommendations and predictions/simulations on human dose and exposure together with the (senior) clinical pharmacologist /pharmacometricians as appropriate
  • Ensure preclinical PKPD understanding and implementation of the biomarker strategy in projects before embarking on clinical studies
  • Evaluate and interpret PKPD data to prepare for internal governance bodies
  • Contribute to the PKPD part of regulatory documents (e.g. IND, IMPD, IB, NDA)
  • Work collaboratively with other scientists including Clinical pharmacologists, bioscientists and translational scientists to ensure an adequate forward and back translation of PK, PKPD data and models.
  • Work collaboratively with other expertise within DMPK and Bioscience/Pharmacology
  • Create a vibrant and innovative working environment where improvements and new ideas are adopted and freely shared among the teams
  • Scientific Management, Problem Solving, Communication
  • Provide expert technical direction, challenge and problem solving in R&D projects.
  • Take responsibility for the quality, reputation and communication and delivery of M&S science in projects.
  • Will influence and impact in their project delivery and capability development within their discipline across DMPK/M&S science.
  • Provide disciplinary scientific leadership, coaching and mentorship for less experienced scientists.
  • Identify leading improvements in science and technologies that can be successfully applied to a highly competitive drug discovery or development process that contributes to achievement of Business goals.
  • Recommend, gain commitment to, initiate, lead and champion new science and technology initiatives to improve DMPK/M&S science capability to deliver projects.
  • Advise Senior Management on new science and technology within their discipline.
  • When appropriate patent and/or publish papers and reviews in internationally recognised journals
  • Lead scientific discipline networks and act as a focus for debate within the AstraZeneca science community
  • Advise on and participate in development of a Discovery or Development strategy in a particular area or discipline
  • Demonstrate and role model creativity and innovation on projects
  • Advise Management on Scientific Ladder appointments up to Associate Principal Scientist
  • Manage student and Post Doc programmes
  • Lead external collaborative projects with academic or cross-pharma pre-competitive groups
  • Ensure compliance with corporate code of conduct guidance and ensuring adherence to best SHE practice

Essential qualifications/experience:

  • Ph. D. or equivalent in relevant scientific discipline, pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, with several years of relevant experience in drug discovery and development.
  • Extensive experience in DMPK and PKPD within a drug discovery environment

Preferred qualifications/experience:

  • Expertise in Oncology drug discovery
