The Principal Automation Engineer provides technical and project management delivery across a portfolio of Automation, MES and IT projects to support activities or maintain systems/equipment in own area of expertise.

Job Responsibilities:


  • Contributes to the development and drives implementation of operational plans to achieve IT-Automation strategy objectives.
  • Communicates business needs and helps translate these needs into requirements and costed options to meet business targets.
  • Develops and cultivates technical expertise and knowledge within department and across the Automation Engineering global community by disseminating best practices and sharing knowledge across functions.
  • Drives collaboration and integration with AZ IT organization.
  • Strategically evaluates the principles and processes for delivering compliant and reliable control systems that meet the business requirements.
  • Oversees the introduction of new processes from the identification of business need, through to the timely introduction and formal acceptance of the change by all customers.
  • Identifies and leads improvement initiatives and project teams in support of longer term business strategy.
  • Responsible for planning, design, and implementation of capital and expense Automation, MES and/or IT projects for Mt. Vernon site.

Technical Leadership:

  • Acts as lead engineer for a significant functional area within Mt. Vernon IT-Automation.
  • Identifies best practices and technical trends in industry related to manufacturing control, execution, and data analytics.
  • Implements best practices to create competitive advantage for the site.
  • Introduces new technologies and systems and the support services needed for sustainability.

Project/Program Management:

  • Ensures projects are implemented in line with identified AstraZeneca policies, procedures and standards, to achieve agreed scope and cost.
  • Translates business proposals into costed options, balancing various influencing factors or alternatively reviews estimates & programmes for project work to ensure they meet agreed business targets.
  • Manages the progress & expenditure of projects within own business area.
  • Ensures compliance with Information Technology, Engineering, Safety, Health and Environment and all other work standards.
  • Contributes to ongoing development and performance enhancement of the project management function by measuring and monitoring key performance indicators of project delivery.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a sustainable data integrity program for the site in accordance with the site/global standards.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a sustainable obsolescence program for automated equipment and IT infrastructure.
  • Responsible for creating site automation and integration standards and working with capital engineering and external contractors for standards adherence.



  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Engineering, Computer Science, or other related technical discipline.


  • Minimum six years’ experience (or four years’ experience with a Master’s degree) in Automation Engineering, IT, or related field.
  • Project management experience and proficiency required; PMP certification desired.
  • Knowledge and understanding of validation and qualification principles, project management, and change control principles.
  • Ability to understand and utilize financial analyses to make good decisions in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience implementing computerized systems in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work and communicate within a global, culturally diverse, and fast-paced, team environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing business needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Sound understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice, Safety, Health and Environment and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Good working knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry.


  • Master’s degree is desirable.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry is desired.
  • PMP certification desired.
