The new R&D Oncology organisation brings together early and late oncology teams, from discovery through to late-stage development, with oncology specific Regulatory and Biometrics groups.

Pharmaceutical Sciences focuses on the intelligent design of medicines and delivery systems. This function has three priority areas – Early Chemical Development, Early Product Development and Advanced Drug Delivery. We’re supporting synthesis, formulation and delivery of IMED’s portfolio across the main therapy areas from early discovery to Phase llB clinical trials.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a polymer-based drug delivery research project as part of a multidisciplinary team here at AZ whilst receiving mentoring from a leading academic in the research area.

Drug delivery systems can transform the therapeutic index of a drug through controlled released and tissue selectivity and have great potential for improving patients’ lives. However, one of the challenges is that drug molecule properties vary significantly, meaning that we need adaptable drug delivery systems that can accommodate a range of properties and still behave in a similar manner after administration. You’ll be exploring an area of adaptable drug delivery systems based on self-assembled amphiphilic block- and graft-copolymers to improve drug loading, nanoparticle size, and stability through non-covalent bonding.

We have state-of-the-art polymer and nanoparticle characterization equipment, which will enable cutting edge research to be performed. You’ll develop your research profile by presenting your work to experts at international conferences and global AZ internal meetings and have a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges that nanoparticles face in development.

We’re looking for a highly talented and creative polymer scientist to grow our capabilities in the advanced drug delivery field. You’ll be responsible for driving the project forward through innovation in polymer and colloid chemistry and collaboration with colleagues within the advanced drug delivery and nanomedicine areas at AZ.

You’ll be based in a cutting-edge pharmaceutical development laboratory and will routinely be synthesising monomers, performing polymerisations and synthesising and characterising bespoke macromolecules.

You’ll need to regularly communicate results at departmental meetings and will be expected to attend internal global meetings to present findings as well as at internationally attended conferences. You’ll be expected to publish articles in high quality peer-reviewed journals to boost your profile and add to the scientific reputation of AZ and will be responsible for managing your workload.

You’ll also be responsible for setting up and maintaining your own collaborations over the duration of your time at AZ and will be expected to travel as necessary to other sites.

Education and Experience required;

Essential:

• PhD in chemistry/polymer/materials/colloid science

• Experience with supramolecular chemistry

• Excellent synthetic chemistry and analytical skills

• Background in polymer drug delivery with micelles/self-assembled systems, liposomes or other vesicles.

• Experience using techniques such as MALDI-TOF-MS, DLS, NTA, GPC, AF4, SANS, SAXS.

Desirable:

• Prior experience with characterization and application of self-assembled drug delivery systems in vitro and in vivo

• Worked with a range of polymerization techniques including ROP

• Understanding of the protein corona and influence on drug delivery platforms

• Understanding of drug delivery and the biological challenges

• Proven publication track record

Skills and Capabilities required:

• Proven ability to work independently

• Excellent communication skills

• Drive and capability to establish the role and influence the area of drug delivery

• Works meticulously and records all results to a high standard

• Focus on attention to detail
