The new R&D BioPharmaceuticals organisation brings together research and development teams, from discovery through to late-stage development for Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolic (CVRM), Respiratory, Inflammatory and Autoimmune (RIA) therapy areas, and opportunistically for Microbial Sciences and Neuroscience.

Pharmaceutical Sciences focuses on the intelligent design of medicines and delivery systems. This function has three priority areas – Early Chemical Development, Early Product Development and Advanced Drug Delivery. We’re supporting synthesis, formulation and delivery of IMED’s portfolio across the main therapy areas from early discovery to Phase llB clinical trials.

Gene therapy is currently one of the most exciting scientific areas in pharmaceutical industry; it has an enormous potential to deliver novel medicines for the cure of monogenetic diseases. Key for success of such therapies is the safe delivery of functional oligonucleotides to the cytosol. This project aims at inhaled nanomedicines to directly target pulmonary tissue and to mitigate systemic safety risks. It comes as an exceptional opportunity to join a cross-functional, global research project spanning AZ´s Respiratory therapeutic area and AZ´s pharmaceutical development. In a truly multi-disciplinary effort, you will investigate nanocarrier-based delivery systems aimed at improving the efficiency of gene delivery. You’ll collaborate with experts in AZ discovery functions and have full access to additional support by a leading academic supervisor. You’ll be based in Macclesfield, our state-of-the-art facility for pharmaceutical development. Interaction with experts in the Respiratory therapeutic area and supporting departments may include occasional travelling to additional sites in UK and Sweden.

This opportunity is lab-based and focussed on the synthesis and characterization of dendrimeric macromolecules as delivery systems. It will include the full characterization of the macromolecules and their polyplexes with encapsulated oligonucleotides. You’ll use your expertise in chemical synthesis, route design and development to discover materials with desirable properties to apply them for oligonucleotide delivery. You’ll certainly participate in the follow-up investigations such as imaging-based and fluorometric profiling to elucidate distribution, effect and viability of the oligonucleotide/dendrimeric systems. Successful novel delivery systems will be evaluated in animal studies to investigate pharmacokinetic profiles and transfection efficacy.

Your genuine passion for science, interest for multidisciplinary research and team-working capabilities will enable you to make a significant contribution to identifying drug delivery systems as a prerequisite for the development of gene therapy. You’ll have the opportunity to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present results - internally and externally - to expand your own and AZ’s scientific reputation.

Education and Experience required;


• Doctoral degree in chemistry, organic chemistry or polymer chemistry

• Broad and proven experience in synthetic organic chemistry

• Proven experience in the synthesis and characterization of deliverysystems based on functional polymers or macromoelcules

• Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, ideally in the area of material sciences


• Experience in dendrimer synthesis / chemical modification

• Knowledge and experience of peptide synthesis and handling

• Formulation and characterization of self-assembled complexes

• Experience with intracellular delivery systems such as dendriplexes

• Basic knowledge on in vitro and in vivo imaging technology and cell assays

• Knowledge of cellular uptake and trafficking

Skills and Capabilities required:

• Expertise on the characterization of macromolecules, techniques including NMR, LCMS, GPC, MALDI-TOF

• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and crossfunctional enviroment

• Excellent communication skills

• Ability to plan and conduct research independently
