Spirogen sits within the AstraZeneca Science Units and is highly innovative. The team has developed a potent and flexible class of ADC (Antibody Drug Conjugate) payloads based on their proprietary PBD (pyrrolobenzodiazepine) platform technology, with marked improvements in terms of activity, ease of manufacture and therapeutic index.

You will be based in the London Spirogen offices, reporting into the Chief Scientific Officer.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • You will lead and develop a team of analytical scientists, and you take line-management responsibility for the team.
  • You plan, prioritise and schedule the team’s activities, ensuring appropriate studies are delivered on time.
  • You will manage the day-to-day running of a mass spectrometry laboratory.
  • You display scientific leadership in developing the analytical sciences team and in your contributions to the company’s Antibody-Drug Conjugate R&D activities. Use sound scientific judgement in communicating scientific recommendations to key business partners.
  • You actively build partnerships and represent analytical sciences on project teams across the company, and with external organizations.
  • Support ADC Research activities with analytical studies as required. These include hyphenated (RP-, IEX-, HIC-, and SEC-) LCMS techniques, small molecule MS, native protein MS, peptide mapping and targeted proteomics.
  • Drive the development, validation and implementation of assays for the quantitation and/or characterisation of both the small molecule and protein components of ADCs in various matrices (e.g. tissue, plasma, blood, buffer), especially as applied to PK analysis.

Essential requirements:

  • You have completed a PhD in a relevant Analytical field and Post-Doctoral or equivalent industrial experience.
  • You are a subject matter expert in mass spectrometry, especially in the development and validation of PK assays for both small molecules and proteins.
  • Excellent organisational skills and a can-do attitude.
  • You bring extensive experience in protein mass spectrometry (whole protein MS, native MS, peptide mapping), including data analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • A proven ability to achieve results through others.

Desirable requirements:

  • Having had previous line management experience would be a distinct benefit in this role.
  • Demonstrate good knowledge and understanding of organic- and protein-chemistry.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas, especially applied to antibodies or ADCs. This includes ADME/PK assay development, especially for Biologics, Protein characterisation by MS, or Sample enrichment/preparation from biological matrices.
  • Additional experience in a range of analytical techniques for characterisation of proteins (e.g. HPLC (SEC, HIC, IEX), cIEF, SDS-PAGE, ELISA, SPR, ITC etc).
