Main Duties and Responsibilities

We are seeking a dynamic thought leader in Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmune translational medicine in our Gaithersburg, MD headquarters.  The expectation of this role is to provide exceptional scientific and strategic leadership to understand molecular heterogeneity with a focus on asthma, COPD, IPF, atopic dermatitis and other inflammatory diseases and will apply this knowledge to the development of biologics at MedImmune. 

The Scientist II / Sr. Scientist will work with a team of translational medicine leaders, lab-enabled scientists and bioinformatics analysts to mine genomic and proteomic data from internal and external collaborations and clinical trials. The candidate will hold a leadership role on one or more Product Development Teams and in this capacity, will focus on developing testable biomarker and personalized healthcare strategies in a range of respiratory and inflammatory indications, requiring analysis of research, translational and clinical data. The expected output is high-quality, scientifically-based product development decisions to be communicated to key stakeholders.

This is a high-profile role requiring an individual with outstanding communication and leadership skills.   Vital to this role is the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders in Research, Clinical Development, Biostatistics and other functions within MedImmune / AstraZeneca and to work effectively with external academic collaborators. The individual must be viewed as a strong scientific and strategic leader who can work within a fast-paced organization to translate fundamental insights into the molecular heterogeneity of human diseases into targeted therapeutic and biomarker hypotheses that can be tested in clinical trials.  The successful candidate is expected to drive the publication of manuscripts in top-tier scientific, technical or medical journals thereby establishing Medimmune’s scientific leadership.

Qualifications & Skills

Essential for both Scientist II and Sr Scientist levels:

  • Outstanding record of innovative contributions to translational research in respiratory or inflammatory diseases, as evidenced by a strong publication record, inventorship on patents/filings and presentations at major conferences.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail and demonstrated ability to write technical reports, biomarker protocols, perform quantitative analyses, and graph and present data.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills to work and lead in a matrix team environment.
  • Strong knowledge of drug discovery and clinical development.
  • Ability to develop biomarker strategies and diagnostics to evaluate successful response to treatment.

Strongly desired experience:

  • Aanalyzing large datasets including genomics and proteomics, together with a sound understanding of critical development functions, e.g. clinical and biostatistics.
  • Contributing to the design of clinical study protocols and the writing of key regulatory documents (e.g. IND, IB).
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in allergic disease and type 2 inflammation.

Education and Experience:

  • For Scientist II: Degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. molecular biology, cell signaling, bioinformatics) - Bachelor's Degree with 13-15 years of relevant experience;  Master's Degree with 10-13 years of relevant experience;  PhD Degree with 3-7 years of relevant experience.
  • For Senior Scientist: Degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. molecular biology, cell signaling, bioinformatics) - Bachelor's Degree with 15-17 years of relevant experience;  Master's Degree with 13-15 years of relevant experience;  PhD Degree with 7-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Candidates possessing a minimum of 13 years post-Master of Science or 7 years post-MD/PhD experience in an academic and/or industry setting are strongly preferred.
