Reporting to the VP R&D Bioinformatics, the Research Informatics Engineer II or Senior Research Informatics Engineer will support MedImmune’s antibody drug development initiatives by performing scientific systems analysis, data modeling, data extract, transform, and load (ETL) functions, systems support, and allied activities for new and existing Research Informatics systems.  The identified person will also perform ongoing operational and content support for the inclusion of new scientific data and analyses workflows into existing integrated research science systems, as well as novel data integration systems.

The person hired into this position will also engage and assist in the identification of and support activities necessary to implement integrative informatics activities and improve data workflows in R&D as directed.  This effort will include replacement of multi-laboratory, spreadsheet-centric workflows with database-centric solutions to help drive efficiencies for multiple therapeutic areas for the Research Science groups, as well as implementing data workflows for data capture, mining and reporting for the Research organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a key Research Bioinformatics member to evaluate, design, implement, and improve research data systems and applications.
  • Support data mining activities through the design and delivery of novel tools and techniques.
  • Actively interface with colleagues across Research and IT to support MedImmune therapeutic pipeline.
  • Apply comprehensive data ontologies to support the integration of multiple Clinical, Translational and Research systems to meet Research Bioinformatics long-term informatics strategy.
  • Document and train staff in research informatics tools, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Assist and support the integration of R&D systems in multiple Therapeutic Areas to maximize speed of preclinical drug pipeline.
  • Represent the Research Bioinformatics department at scientific conferences and talks to disseminate findings and knowledge
  • Actively update skills and knowledges and contribute to informatics strategic planning

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Life science, Computer Science, Information Science, or related fields.
  • For Clinical Informatics Engineer II: BS with 3-4 years for experience or MS with 2-3 years of experience
  • For Senior Clinical Informatics Engineer: BS with 6+ years for experience or MS with 4+ years of experience
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in the development and support of scientific and clinical data systems.
  • Direct experience in the development, deployment, and maintenance of multi-tier high-quality and extendable application systems.
  • Familiar with client-side data visualization framework
  • Direct experience in the development, deployment, and maintenance of large scale biological databases and related activities.
  • Firsthand experience in the interpretation and analysis of large, complex clinical datasets.
  • Proficient in best practice and toolsets for software development, including issue tracking system (e.g, JIRA) and version control system (e.g., Bitbucket, github).
  • Familiar with software engineering process, including requirement and acceptance criteria gathering and testing (e.g., selenium testing framework), and continuous integration
  • Development experience in Python, Java, JavaScript, R
  • Have strong knowledge of current technologies in IT infrastructure, OS (Windows, UNIX/ Linux), databases (Oracle, SQL Server, RDF), computation architectures, container technologies, and software development tools and frameworks.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working on complex, cross-functional project teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and facilitation skills with the ability to work with others to achieve objectives.

  • Enjoy working and contributing in a globally distributed team.
  • Experience with the implementation of scientific and clinical data standards.
  • Experience with implementing distributed workflows in computational cluster or cloud environments
  • Experience in designing tools within interactive environments for bioinformatics computing such as Galaxy workbench
  • Familiarity with public research informatics systems (GEO, NCBI, Esembl, Array Express, SNPdb, PubMed, KEGG, etc.).
  • Understanding of biomedical research and clinical data and drug discovery workflows.
  • Prior Experience working in a preclinical research, translational science and/ or antibody research setting.
  • PhD in Life Science, Computer Science, Information Science, or related fields.

Travel:  Some travel required (less than 5%) to support other MedImmune locations, including CA and UK
