The Global Media team manages AstraZeneca’s reputation in the world’s most influential media. This is a high-profile, highly-visible and critical corporate communications role that would suit an ambitious candidate who enjoys a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and who has proven experience in corporate media relations and science communications.

Reporting to the Head of Global Media Relations, the Director will help manage global media engagement to support the company’s priorities of achieving scientific leadership, sustained financial growth and being a great place to work.

The role will help lead the development and delivery of AstraZeneca’s global media strategy and corporate narrative, lead the delivery of therapy area media engagement, and bring to life key editorial themes. An important aspect to the job is to manage a large volume of corporate news announcements that are the result of AstraZeneca’s significant progress in rebuilding its pipeline and returning to growth.

The candidate must be able to gain the trust and respect of journalists and among colleagues at AstraZeneca – including with senior leaders, who will rely on the team’s advice and guidance on media-related questions. The candidate should be equally at home discussing scientific and financial issues and be proactive in not only developing stories, but in finding new ways and channels of telling them in a continually changing media landscape.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop accurate, clear and compelling messages in a timely way for global and UK corporate and financial media and top tier pharmaceutical trade media on a wide range of topics, from product-related news to financial reporting and governance questions.
  • Identify, develop and place stories in media outlets that support AstraZeneca’s business and reputation
  • Write, edit and manage the approval of corporate news and stock exchange announcements, and distribute these in line with AstraZeneca policy and financial market requirements
  • Support the Head of Global Media Relations on quarterly financial results
  • Handle media enquiries and act as a company spokesperson, building trust and respect for AstraZeneca among journalists and news organisations
  • As part of a corporate affairs crisis management team, manage media enquiries in response to issues/crisis scenarios
  • Work with other functions and markets in the organisation, and with external partners
  • Advise and counsel senior management on issues/decisions that could impact company reputation and share price
  • Coach AstraZeneca senior management to improve media skills
  • Help manage press office systems such as media database, monitoring and evaluation tools
  • Support the Head of Global Media Relations in managing the contribution of the external consultancy.

Knowledge and experience:

  • Experience working in a busy press office and a similar corporate communications environment
  • Sound knowledge of the business media, especially in the UK, US and China. Experience of working with top-tier international media is a distinct advantage
  • Experience of managing complex issues/crises with international dimensions
  • Practical understanding of financial reporting at a UK publicly listed company
  • Scientifically literate with a working knowledge of the life sciences industry
  • Experience of working in a highly regulated sector
  • Relevant therapy area knowledge and expertise

The role requires frequent engagement with journalists in London. Some international travel required.
