As the Senior Director– MS&T you will provide technical leadership for the MS&T organization at the AZ Biologics Manufacturing Center in Frederick, MD (FMC).

MS&T supports the ongoing manufacturing operations and leads cell culture process monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization for our products manufactured at FMC. Additionally, MS&T assists in the writing and reviewing of regulatory submissions and participates in the planning and preparation for regulatory agency inspections.

As the leader of MS&T, you will use your strong technical expertise to lead and guide the MS&T group efforts while providing input on projects and process improvements and serving on cross functional teams across MedImmune/AZ Biologics.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership to the MS&T organization
  • Manage the MS&T leadership team
  • Ensure MS&T support of ongoing manufacturing operations, including: successful transfer of commercial cell culture processes to the site; oversight of the specifications and accuracy of manufacturing instructions for cell culture processes; ensuring processes are compliant with current Good Manufacturing Practices; and coordination with MedImmune/AZ manufacturing and contract manufacturing sites on operational best practices and process improvements
  • Ensure MS&T support of the writing and reviewing of regulatory submissions and participation in the planning and preparation for regulatory agency inspections
  • Responsible for MS&T management and employee career and development, budget, and resource planning.
  • Broad understanding of the science that drives our business and the biologics manufacturing industry. Understands how to focus the work on what is important and how to eliminate roadblocks. Sees ahead clearly and can anticipate future business and science opportunities and trends accurately. Understanding of company-wide policies
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Engage other departments in decision making as appropriate.
  • Responsible for the successful operation of MS&T activities. Decisions would affect the financial, employee, or public relations posture of the company. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would result in failure to achieve major goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Represents the organization unit as prime internal and external contracts on operations. 
  • Conducts briefings and technical meetings for top management, customer representatives and industry groups. 
  •  Interacts with top level-level managers concerning matters of significance to business and product quality to ensure customer expectations are met. 
  • Good listening skills, interpersonal savvy, conflict management and peer relations.  Ability to effectively present complex data and strategy to large groups.

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS Degree in Engineering, Biotechnology or Life Sciences, or equivalent focus of study.
  • 15+ years’ experience or equivalent, in a similar role interacting with top level managers and customer representatives on matters of significance to the Company.


  • MS Degree desired in Engineering, Biotechnology or Life Sciences, or equivalent focus of study.
