Within Biopharmaceutical Development (BPD), our work focuses on transforming complex molecules into medicines. This department covers the design and development of manufacturing processes and dosage forms for biopharmaceutical products - everything from molecule discovery to packaging the final product.

Within the Cell Culture Fermentation Sciences (CCFS) department, we are looking for a Scientist II to join the Upstream Bioprocess Development - Bioprocess Analytics team.

The CCFS department is responsible for delivering on and advancing AstrZeneca’s mammalian cell culture upstream process development capabilities by working as an interdisciplinary team focussed on internal technology development, external collaborations as well as a wide range of state-of-the-art drug development projects. The central theme is process optimisation.

In the role of Scientist II, you are primarily responsible for rapid analytical support for process development using automated assays. You will be instrumental in supporting key decisions to be taken (cell line construction, upstream and purification process development) that are essential to progression of the portfolio biologics projects for human therapy. This is partly a lab based position where you will also be involved with the development and implementation of new process analytical technologies (PAT) for cell culture samples derived from bioreactors.

In more detail, your responsibilities will include:

  • Performance of high throughput process analytics to contribute to the development of bioprocesses for recombinant mAbs and other recombinant proteins. Techniques include liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, biosensor technologies, CE-SDS, mycoplasma testing, LC-MS and Western Blot.
  • Operating automated liquid handling platforms e.g. Biomek/Hamilton/Tecan.
  • To interact with other functions in BioPharm Development and Research to develop new knowledge and new ways of working to support the product portfolio.
  • Work in a collaborative matrix environment within the BPA team supporting CCFS and Protein Purification Sciences (PPS) team. Work closely with the Analytical Sciences team as required and with the research/discovery functions.
  • To oversee students as required arising from placements or by academic collaboration.
  • Initiate or participate in academic collaborations or external technology evaluations.
  • Have a knowledge and understanding of assay practical and theoretical principles to perform process assays reproducibility and trouble shoot problems
  • Develop and implement new assays based on an understanding of critical quality attributes of recombinant protein products and their methods of production.
  • Maintain awareness of new technologies, current industrial techniques and scientific literature
  • Record all experiments accurately, clearly and in a timely fashion; prepare data summaries as required
  • Presentation of data at informal group meetings for discussion
  • Presenting at departmental meetings
  • Implement and promote AstraZeneca’s health and safety practices including the regulations governing COSHH, biological agents and genetically modified micro-organisms as detailed in the relevant risk assessments.

What we need from you:


  • PhD Degree in Life Sciences, Biochemical Engineering, or equivalent experience.


  • Essential – Understanding and practical experience with analytics used to support high throughput characterisation of recombinant proteins.
  • Desirable – Knowledge of cell line development, bioreactor operation and maintenance of bioreactor processes.
