As part of the Cambridge-based cutting-edge Antibody Discovery and Protein Engineering (ADPE) team, the Data Scientist will be responsible for applying and developing computational methods to curate and interpret large datasets, and building algorithms to enable the in silico prediction of key properties of biologics drugs to drive innovation. The individual will work closely and collaboratively with Protein Engineers across ADPE and with Research Bioinformatic scientists. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead as a subject matter expert in machine learning and statistical knowledge and to apply these skills to the exciting field of biologics drug discovery.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of cross functional scientists and bioinformaticians to collaboratively develop solutions relevant to biologics drug discovery
  • Develop and apply machine learning and statistical approaches to generate insights into structured research data
  • Data curation and preparation for machine learning applications
  • Contributing to and leading AI/ML projects for ADPE
  • Mentor and support the training of technical and non-expert colleagues in data science and machine learning
  • Developing and implementing machine learning models with well organised and documented code
  • Building or internalising appropriate algorithms and techniques to answer defined biological and technical questions
  • Working with teams across ADPE department and across therapy areas to discover, validate and build knowledge on the best ways to implement machine learning to LI/LO of in-house datasets
  • Keep up to date with advances in AI/ML methods in Systems Biology and Systems Medicine.
  • Ensure that results are scientifically robust and documented
  • Drive innovation and scientific excellence in Bioinformatics/Data Science through internal scientific development and external collaborations
  • Make MedImmune scientifically visible by publishing scientific papers and presenting data at conferences.

Essential Requirements

As Data Scientist, you contribute to a science-driven and entrepreneurial organization and are hungry for new ideas, innovative ways of working and continuous learning. You will collaborate closely with other teams to drive efficiency and take advantage of knowledge and experiences. As an individual, you have a positive can-do attitude and are eager to learn in each interaction.

  • Strong quantitative background with a PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Biology or similar
  • Post-doc experience or otherwise relevant Data Science research experience
  • Track record of applying ML to projects in drug discovery, development or an academic setting
  • Proven deep knowledge of at least one of the following areas: deep learning, natural language processing, Bayesian methods (probabilistic programming, Gaussian processes)
  • Programming proficiency and experience with relevant software tools such as R, Python and MATLAB, version control and databases (SQL as well as NoSQL)
  • Working in a Linux environment, with experience of cluster or cloud computing
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including experience in communicating across discipline boundaries
  • Strong publication record
