Position:             Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence Data Scientist

Location:            Cambridge UK/Gothenburg Sweden

As part of AstraZeneca’s continuing investment in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) we have several open positions for skilled ML/AI researchers and engineers. You will be joining a diverse team of data scientists working across the fields of statistics, bioinformatics and computer vision in the Quantitative Biology department and can be based in either Cambridge, UK or Gothenburg, Sweden. In this role you will create advanced ML models to dramatically improve all aspects of drug discovery, from generating testable hypotheses about targets, to predicting compound properties, to automating complex decision-making processes, and to turning data into knowledge. By pushing the boundaries of AI and ML you will contribute to delivering life-changing medicines. You will be expected to proactively seek opportunities to contribute; influencing at all levels, from bench scientists to senior business leaders. Engaging with the external environment via publications, presentations, and academic collaborations will be an important component of your work.

As a ML/AI Data Scientist your skills and qualifications will ideally include:

  • Strong quantitative background with a PhD in computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, engineering, or similar.
  • Broad experience in data analysis and classical supervised and unsupervised ML methods such as random forests, SVMs, penalized regression, KNN, clustering, dimensionality reduction, and ensemble methods.
  • Deep knowledge of at least one of the following areas: deep learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, Bayesian methods (probabilistic programming, Gaussian processes).
  • Programming proficiency and experience with relevant software tools such as R, Python and MATLAB (other programming languages welcome), version control (Git/Bitbucket), and databases (SQL as well as NoSQL).
  • Working in a Linux environment, with experience of cluster or cloud computing (e.g. AWS or Azure).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Your main responsibilities will involve:

  • Developing and implementing machine learning models with well organised and documented code.
  • Building or internalizing, appropriate algorithms and techniques to answer defined biological questions.
  • Working with drug discovery projects and therapeutic areas to identify and deliver solutions for addressing key biological questions.
  • Building knowledge of ML/AI capabilities across R&D.
  • Contributing to and leading local and global projects for the Quantitative Biology department.
  • Keeping up to date with advances in ML/AI methods and software
