The Macclesfield Campus, located on the edge of the Peak District in the North West of England, is home to a number of AstraZeneca teams focused on commercial manufacturing and development. It is the largest AstraZeneca Pharmaceutical Technology & Development (PT&D) site globally and you will be joining a vibrant community of scientists and engineers with diverse skills and backgrounds. You will receive a comprehensive on-boarding programme spanning science, drug development, systems, quality and SHE areas, enabling you to rapidly become a valued contributing member of Chemical Development.

As a Principal Scientist for Experimental Data Capture and Utilisation you will lead, define and implement the departmental approach to data generation, capture and utilisation

Key Accountabilities

In this role you will:

  • Act as the Chemical Development (Chem Dev) lead into AstraZeneca's PT&D Digital Transformation programme and wider corporate initiatives
  • Understand the requirements of Chem Dev regarding data capture, utilisation and re-use.
  • Enable maximal data generation through effectiveness of Chem Dev experimental approaches.
  • Implement the roadmap for data capture, utilisation and re-use.
  • Deliver the infrastructure, ways of working and Science & technology/improvement projects against the roadmap
  • Maintain awareness of external developments within and outside the company to find opportunities to improve Chem Dev’s performance in this area

Data Capture Strategy

  • Define the long term data capture strategy for Chem Dev including data standard requirements.
  • Provide guidance for structured data capture within experimental work to enable subsequent utilisation

Chem Dev and PT&D Data Systems

  • Ensure that data systems serve the needs of Chem Dev scientists and projects.
  • Identify and deliver the optimal utilisation of the Electronic Lab notebook system.
  • Lead the Chem Dev input to external collaboration on data utilisation projects.
  • Ensure Chem Dev has the required IT/IS infrastructure to deliver this

Data utilisation and visualisation to give Process Understanding

  • Provide guidance on the utilisation and visualisation of Chem Dev data
  • Develop tools and strategy for conversion of data into knowledge
  • Incorporate the needs of of all scientific skill groups and specialists in Chem Dev e.g. PAT, Prediction and Modelling
  • Champion new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning
  • Develop approaches for how Chem Dev access data that is generated externally.

All these activities will impact on the speed, quality and cost of the AZ development and commercial portfolio. You will, therefore, have a significant impact on both financial and reputational aspects of the business.

Required Skills & Knowledge

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Hold a BSc/PhD in a relevant discipline. You will also have significant experience working within a Research &/or Process Development environment, within the pharmaceutical or chemical industry
  • Have broad chemical development experience such as experimental and automation equipment knowledge such that you understand the impact of data workflows.
  • Have experience of leading large project/change work.
  • Have experience of working with external collaborators
  • Demonstrate a track record of delivering new science, technology or process improvements.
  • Experience of developing networks across different groups within an organisation.
  • A deep understanding of the principles of data management.
  • Be able to think and operate across functional boundaries, challenge the status quo and seek opportunities for business improvement
  • Possess the ability to analyse and interpret complex situations and provide clear strategic directions for others
  • Have superb communication and strategic influencing skills across interfaces of discipline, culture, and expertise both internally and externally
  • Have excellent team working and networking skills which will encourage team effectiveness.
  • Have strong leadership skills
  • Be experienced and skilled at facilitation at all levels
  • Be a problem solver with in depth technical skills
  • Have knowledge of business change and project management skills
  • Demonstrate a high degree of personal credibility
